Clumber Spaniel

The Clumber Spaniel is the largest of the sporting spaniels and quite possibly the most laid-back, earning its reputation as the gentleman of the spaniel world. At 25-39 kg, they are heavy-boned and low-slung, moving with a distinctive rolling gait that conveys their relaxed approach to life. Daily living with a Clumber means accepting a dog that operates at its own unhurried pace — they are methodical rather than frantic, both in the field and at home. Despite their calm demeanor, they are genuine sporting dogs with excellent noses and tireless determination when working in thick cover. They need about 60 minutes of daily exercise, which can include moderate walks, swimming, or controlled field work — they are not sprinters and will not join you for a jog. Clumbers are remarkably gentle and tolerant with children, other dogs, and visitors, making them one of the most family-friendly sporting breeds. Training proceeds smoothly with their food-motivated, cooperative nature, though they have a stubborn streak that surfaces when they decide a task is beneath their dignity. The major practical consideration is shedding — Clumber Spaniels shed profusely year-round, producing quantities of white hair that will cover furniture, clothing, and every surface of your home. Their drooping eyes and lips also mean drool is part of the package. They are prone to weight gain and must be kept on strictly measured meals despite their convincing begging. For families who want a calm, affectionate sporting dog and can tolerate epic shedding, the Clumber is a genuinely delightful companion with a sweet, steady temperament.

History

The Clumber Spaniel takes its name from Clumber Park, the Nottinghamshire estate of the Duke of Newcastle, where the breed was developed in the late 18th century. They were originally bred for slow, methodical hunting in dense underbrush, working in teams to drive game toward waiting hunters — a role that valued persistence over speed. The breed was a favorite of British royalty, with both King Edward VII and King George V maintaining Clumber kennels. The AKC recognized the Clumber Spaniel in 1884, making it one of the first nine breeds registered with the organization.

Care Guide

Their dense, flat coat sheds constantly and needs thorough brushing at least three times weekly to manage the volume — invest in quality lint rollers and accept that white hair becomes a permanent accessory. Plan for 60 minutes of moderate daily exercise; they enjoy swimming and walking but will not tolerate intense heat or extended running. Feed carefully measured portions of a weight-management formula, as Clumbers are champion overeaters who gain weight rapidly — keep treats small and deduct them from daily food allowance. Clean their drooping lower eyelids and ear canals weekly to prevent the infections that their facial structure invites.

Common Health Issues

  • Hip dysplasia
Their heavy, low-slung build puts significant stress on the hip joints, making dysplasia a common orthopedic concern that worsens with excess weight. Keeping them lean and providing joint supplements from middle age onward can slow progression.
  • Entropion
The heavy, drooping facial skin causes the lower eyelids to roll inward, irritating the cornea with constant friction from the lashes. Surgical tacking or correction is often needed, particularly if chronic tearing and squinting develop.
  • Ectropion
The opposite of entropion — the lower eyelid droops outward, exposing the conjunctiva to debris, dryness, and infection. Mild cases are managed with lubricating eye drops, while severe cases may require surgical tightening.
  • Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid is common in the breed, contributing to their tendency toward weight gain, lethargy, and skin problems. Regular blood screening detects the condition early, and daily synthetic hormone replacement is straightforward and effective.
