Portuguese Podengo Pequeno

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is the smallest of the three Podengo varieties and carries the ancient Mediterranean hunting dog's instincts in a compact, rustic package. These little rabbit hounds are remarkably athletic for their size — quick, agile, and equipped with sharp senses of sight, scent, and hearing that they use simultaneously when hunting, making them a rare 'multi-sensory' hound. In personality, they are lively and charming, with a playful mischievousness that endears them to their families while simultaneously keeping owners on their toes. They are alert watchdogs with a surprisingly authoritative bark for their size, and they will announce every visitor, delivery, and passing squirrel. In daily life, Podengos are active and curious, requiring regular exercise and mental engagement to prevent boredom-driven behaviors like digging and excessive barking. Their prey drive is strong — small pets including rabbits and rodents are at genuine risk, and even cats may be pursued unless the dog is raised with them from puppyhood. The breed suits active individuals and families who want a spirited, entertaining small dog with genuine athletic ability. They adapt well to apartments if exercised adequately but are happiest with access to a secure yard. Owners seeking a placid, easygoing lapdog will find the Podengo Pequeno's energy and independence overwhelming.

History

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is an ancient breed that has hunted rabbits in Portugal's rocky terrain for thousands of years, likely descending from primitive Mediterranean hunting dogs brought by Phoenician traders. The Pequeno (small) variety was specifically developed to flush rabbits from dense scrub and rocky crevices where larger dogs couldn't penetrate. During the Age of Exploration, Podengos sailed on Portuguese ships as rat catchers, spreading their genetic influence across the globe. The breed was relatively unknown outside Portugal until the late 20th century. The AKC recognized the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno in 2013 in the Hound Group, distinguishing it from the Medium and Large Podengo varieties.

Care Guide

The Podengo Pequeno comes in two coat types — smooth and wire — both requiring minimal grooming. Smooth coats need weekly brushing; wire coats benefit from occasional hand-stripping to maintain texture but should never be clipped. They need 30-45 minutes of active daily exercise, with activities that engage their hunting instincts — lure coursing, barn hunt, and agility are excellent outlets. Training should be positive and engaging; they are intelligent but independent, and repetitive drilling causes them to lose interest quickly. Their small size makes dental care important — regular brushing and professional cleanings prevent the periodontal disease common in small breeds. Secure fencing is essential, as their prey drive and agility make them accomplished escape artists when motivated.

Common Health Issues

  • patellar luxation
The kneecap slides out of its normal position, causing periodic lameness and an abnormal gait common in small breeds. Weight management and avoiding repetitive jumping from heights help protect the joints, with surgical correction indicated for persistent or severe cases.
  • Legg-Calve-Perthes disease
The femoral head loses blood supply and degenerates, causing hip pain and hind-leg lameness typically appearing between 4-12 months of age. Surgical removal of the affected femoral head generally provides excellent pain relief and restoration of function in small breeds.
  • progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Inherited retinal degeneration that progressively diminishes vision, usually first evident as difficulty seeing in dim light. DNA testing of breeding pairs prevents transmission, and affected dogs typically compensate well using their other heightened senses.
